As we talked about learner's dictionaries, Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (CCALED) can not be left behind. The feature of CCALED is that it contains a great deal of sentences cited from COBUILD, a famous corpus of contemporary English text, so English learners can read real-world sentences and learn how each English word is used in our real life.
On the contrary, CCALED has something worried by learners, too. If you once used CCALED, you might be able to recognize the disadvantage of CCALED very easily – the definitions of every word are almost long sentence. We can tell that it is very unique when we compare CCALED with other learner’s dictionaries, like Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (CCALD), Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD), etc.
And yet, although using CCALED could take learners a little more time to study English, learners do not have to throw it away. Why? The reason is that CCALED has a definitive advantage which CCALD, OALD, etc. can not provide. Learners can enjoy and benefit from this advantage by using compact-disc version of CCALED. The CD-ROM version of CCALED could be accessed and switched between many program windows in extraordinarily easy way, just two buttons on your keyboard, Alt and Tab. Although this design seems not a big deal, learners could enjoy the convenience when they have run many programs, like Word, Firefox, etc., and had to understand a lot of words through a dictionary at the same time. For me, my favorite dictionary is CD-ROM version of CCALED when I drift into the complex situation described above.
